The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic: A Jewel of Sri Lanka



The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, known locally as Sri Dalada Maligawa, is one of the most revered monuments in Sri Lanka. Situated in the hill capital of Kandy, this temple is not only a place of worship but also a symbol of sovereignty, culture, and artistry. Its significance extends far beyond religion, making it a living testament to the island’s rich heritage.

The temple was built in 1595 by King Vimaladharmasuriya I to house the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha, which had been brought to Sri Lanka centuries earlier. From ancient times, the relic was considered a symbol of kingship—whoever possessed it was seen as the rightful ruler of the land. This made the temple both a spiritual and political center. Over the centuries, despite invasions and colonial challenges, the temple stood resilient, safeguarding the relic and the nation’s identity. In recognition of its global value, UNESCO declared the Sacred City of Kandy a World Heritage Site in 1988.



The temple is the spiritual heart of Sri Lanka. It attracts thousands of pilgrims daily, who come to pay homage to the relic. Its cultural importance is most vividly seen during the Esala Perahera festival, one of Asia’s grandest religious processions. During this annual event, the relic is paraded through the streets of Kandy with majestic elephants, traditional dancers, drummers, and torchbearers. This festival not only celebrates Buddhist devotion but also showcases the unity of Sri Lankan culture, blending faith, art, and tradition in a dazzling spectacle.







The Temple of the Tooth is a masterpiece of Kandyan architecture. Built as part of the royal palace complex, it features golden roofs, intricately carved wooden panels, and beautifully painted murals.

The temple’s artistry reflects the skill of Kandyan craftsmen, with ivory carvings, lacquer work, and stone inscriptions adorning its halls. The temple grounds, surrounded by moats and gardens, create a serene atmosphere that mirrors Buddhist aesthetics of peace and harmony. Every detail from the golden casket that houses the relic to the decorative shrines speaks of devotion and artistry.

At the heart of the temple lies the Sacred Tooth Relic, believed to be a fragment of the Buddha’s tooth preserved from his cremation in 543 BCE. For Buddhists worldwide, it is one of the most sacred relics, symbolizing the living presence of the Buddha. Daily rituals are performed by monks, with offerings of flowers, incense, and prayers. These ceremonies, carried out with great reverence, remind devotees that the temple is not merely a historical monument but a living sanctuary of faith.
